Martínez: "We have to rebel against adversity"
The coach's thoughts before the game against Rayo Vallecano
Diego Martínez spoke in the run-up to RCD Espanyol's Friday night fixture at the RCDE Stadium in his pre-match press conference, analysing what will be the team's first home game of the season.
"I'm very excited about this match," he told the media, adding that "the formula for success involves conviction and determination, and that must be the key to giving our best for the fans."
“Everybody is part of the team, which is above each and every one of us. Let's not divert that focus. I am so excited by everything I see from the team, be it their attitude or their the commitment, and this is what has to carry us forward. This is not about individual, but rather RCD Espanyol itself."
The coach explained the current situation with striker Raúl de Tomas, who will not be available against Rayo Vallecano.
“We have been very clear. After the game with Napoli he rejoined the group and had to withdraw due to physical problems after ten minutes. This has been confirmed by the medical service and the player himself. He has not been training in recent days and has not been able to do so normally during preseason. He is the one who is setting out his own recovery process. Hopefully he recovers soon and we can have as many players as possible available. We are in a precarious situation in terms of players at our disposal."
On Rayo, he assured that "we would be be making a big mistake if we were to underestimate them. They are very difficult opponents to compete against. They have drawn at the Camp Nou against FC Barcelona, and also in preseason at Old Trafford against Manchester United. They are a very recognisable and tough team. For me, there are no fixture lists that are easier or harder. We have to have the mentality that we can beat anyone in a game."
"The team have to be chameleon-like, and we want tomorrow to be a much more beautiful and special day after the game. Our situation is difficult but very exciting. We have to rebel against adversity.”
