Martinez: “We want to compete with them”
The RCD Espanyol coach previews Real Madrid clash
Diego Martínez spoke at a press conference ahead of RCD Espanyol’s meeting with Real Madrid on Sunday.
The coach addressed the media at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque on Saturday ahead of his side’s LaLiga meeting with the reigning champions. Real Madrid have won both of their opening league games as they face a third consecutive away game at the RCDE Stadium.
He said, “It’s always a good time to play against the best. They’re one of the best teams in the world and it’s a challenge, but we want to compete with them. They are the defending league champions, defending champions of Europe. Let’s compete!”
This week saw the contract renewal for one of Espanyol’s key players in Sergi Darder. The midfielder signed a new deal which runs until 2026, having already spent a decade across his career playing in the blanquiazul shirt.
Speaking on Darder, Martínez said, “It’s the news of the year. He represents our values and a way of feeling. We feel very proud to continue this path. I’m looking forward to continue working with him for the coming years.”
Alongside Darder’s new contract, the club welcomed two new signings to the first team in Dani Gómez and José Carlos Lazo. The coach was asked about his new attacking recruits and whether they will be ready for Sunday.
Martínez said, “They are very exciting players with good attitudes. They come to help us and to contribute to the team. They are young players who can help us in every moment and perform in LaLiga.”
Regarding team news, Espanyol are without five players for Sunday’s match. Gori, Adrià Pedrosa, Raúl De Tomás, Luca Koleosho & Pol Lozano are unavailable.
