Martínez: “I believe in these players and this project”
The coach looks ahead to Athletic
Diego Martínez spoke to the media ahead of RCD Espanyol’s match against Athletic on Sunday.
The coach spoke at a press conference at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque, ahead of Espanyol’s first game of the month and their first away game since the opening day.
Martínez said, “I am very happy with the dressing room I have. They are the players of Espanyol and for me they are the best in the world. I really believe in those that I have. We have to deal with a lot of things, but I believe in these players and this team.
“I’m proud of them and of RCD Espanyol, these people believe. This is what we have to do. I believe in these players and this project.”
Martínez was speaking for the first time since the transfer window closed on Thursday, and was asked about the window which saw 10 new signings arrive at the club.
On the summer transfer window, he said, “It has been a very difficult and complicated market. It’s a reality we have to deal with, we believe in what we have. Regardless of the circumstances and everything around them, we must keep going forward.”
The coach added, “I am fully committed to the Club, to the fans and to the people I have in the dressing room. Just like the first day, I am full of hope.”
Espanyol face Athletic, who have had a strong unbeaten start to the LaLiga season, at San Mamés. Martínez recognised the challenge but insisted his confidence in his squad, as well as belief to be able to come away with something from Bilbao.
Martínez said, “It’s a rival who have a lot of talent and quality, but we have to be true to our values and our potential. We are very aware of what we need. We believe in our game plan, our possibilities and our potential.”
He went on to say, “The aim is the same, to give the best version of ourselves. We are in a very difficult league, so we have to get give our best. We believe in our chances. Regardless of the rival, we are a competitive team.”
