Darder: "I couldn't miss out on this project"
The RCD Espanyol star talks after his contract renewal is announced
Sergi Darder's contract renewal through to 2026 was accompanied by an official event, featuring RCD Espanyol President, Chen Yanseng, CEO, Mao Ye and Sporting Director, Domingo Catoira. Also alongside them were representatives of the Peñas supporters clubs, ambassadors, representatives of every academy team, and the player's family.
The midfielder expressed his happiness with the extension, which brings a new role of responsibility as one of the senior members of the squad.
“I'm here to help. I didn't want to miss this project. I am more certain than anyone that, if the club is great now, it will become even greater."
“I'm excited by what I am seeing and what is being transmit to me at every level: The president, the coach, the staff, my teammates... It's inspiring to see the enthusiasm with which they work. I'm a person who uses my feelings as a guide a lot, and my feeling about this project is very good. It reminds me a lot of other good seasons.”
The midfielder went on to say that “I see the excitement to grow that is all around. Everybody tries to be better every day. From the first day of preseason it was clear to me. I appreciate the patience of the club to allow me this period of reflection. I like what I am seeing and I wanted to be a part of this.”
Darder added that, in his opinion, “the team are getting better every week. I think we deserve to have more points than we have at the moment. My philosophy is to do better every day. The team have huge room for growth and that is why every day we have to aspire to reach the highest level of performance."
Mao Ye addressed Darder, saying "we want you to be a point of reference at Espanyol for all the boys and girls here, and to continue with us for many more years," whilst Domingo Catoira concluded that “Sergi Darder has to be one of the cornerstones of this new project. That is how the club saw it. We are proud that he is staying with us and that he continues to build our future with us. He is an example to follow and an example of all of our values."
