Official statement
This Wednesday, courts number 32 and number 47 of Madrid provided new evidence in relation to the events that occurred in the match between RCD Espanyol de Barcelona and Club Atlético de Madrid on matchday 35 of last season. After immediately placing the information in the hands of our legal services and, in light of their analysis and the judge's conclusions, RCD Espanyol has decided to take legal action in order to defend the interests of our Club, our members and our fans.
We understand that, given the evidence provided of the omission of images in a decisive moment of that match which affected the outcome of the season, it is our right and obligation to defend the interests of RCD Espanyol to the last consequences in this case in the judicial system.
It is worth remembering that, at the time, the Club challenged the match as we felt seriously harmed by that decision and based on the precedent raised in the other match referred to in the court ruling (the withdrawal of the red card shown to Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr. after the omission of images in the match between Valencia CF and Real Madrid CF).
Today we know that what happened in that match (the goal awarded to Atlético de Madrid that should never have counted) goes far beyond understandable human errors in the sporting field. That decision and other situations, in our opinion still incomprehensible today, decisively influenced a relegation that, we understand, we could have fought to avoid on the pitch in the final match against Almería.
For all this and in defence of our institution and our people, we undertake judicial actions to clarify what happened and to request reparation for the damage caused.
