Moreno: "We have to work hard to win the next game"
The coach analyses the 1-4 defeat to Real Betis
RCD Espanyol coach, Vicente Moreno, spoke in a post-match press conference following the 1-4 loss to Real Betis, saying that “there are situations during the season in which you lose or win. That is the way that things are, but we have gone through a series of games in which we have not won. We have the energy to win the next game, to change that dynamic."
"We have to work hard to win the next match. Then you have to get things right and continue to pick up points. Having 27 points is not an easy thing to do; I think we deserved more, and now we are in a moment in which we are on a run of games without winning. You have to devote your energy to winning the next game."
Moreno would not evaluate the referee's performance overall, but did make clear that he did not feel the Real Betis penalty should have been given.
"After such a resounding result, talking about the penalty brings me problems. But we were winning, and that goal could have been decisive. In that half hour we were doing well. When we went forward, we did damage. We could have scored a few more goals. From two moves, a penalty which was not a penalty and a set piece changed the scoreline and the game. You know that when you go behind, you are going to suffer. You have to encourage the players and get them back on track."
The coach acknowledged that the team must regain defensive solidity.
"There are a lot of goals that we have conceded, and that makes it difficult. We have to improve our efficiency. We generate more scoring chances, and we need to score them. We concede fewer goalscoring actions, but the opposition's efficiency has increased. We are defending better, but those actions are easier for the opposition, like set pieces or the throw-ins in Cádiz. We have to shut this down, otherwise we'll have to score a lot of goals."
