Match Report: Efforts unrewarded against Real Sociedad
RCD Espanyol lose 0-1 on their home debut
RCD Espanyol suffered late heartbreak at the RCDE Stadium, as they conceded late on in a 0-1 loss to Real Sociedad. Take Kubo scored the winner for the visitors, whilst Manolo González' men were unable to convert their chances on LaLiga Matchday 2.
Aiming for their first points of the campaign, RCD Espanyol began the game strongly. A fall by Alejo Veliz inside the box early on was waved away, then shortly afterwards Javi Puado shot wide. A minute later, at the other end, Real Sociedad's Mikel Oyarzabal put so much pressure on Joan Garcia that the goalkeeper's attempt to clear hit the forward and went close to the post.
Garcia made a great save to tip over a free kick taken by Sergio Gomez later on in the first half. RCD Espanyol's speed in attack kept them alive throughout, even without dominating possession.
In the second half, Espanyol were even more ambitious, and a fast break saw them come close to scoring. Veliz, however, scuffed the cutback from Puado, and Jofre Carreras' follow-up was cleared off the line by Aritz Elustondo.
The game was moving towards concluding as a goalless draw until, shortly after coming on as a substitute, Take Kubo got around Brian Olivan and smashed the ball into the net.
A series of RCD Espanyol chances could have got them back level, ending with Joan Garcia heading towards goal having gone forward in the closing seconds. Alex Remiro saved for Real Sociedad, who took the 3 points thanks to a 0-1 win.
