Looking forward to Ferencvaros
Victor Sánchez reminds us that the most important game is always “the next one” and says “let’s top the group, then we’ll think about Osasuna”
“The most important game is the next one”. Victor Sánchez firmly insists on paying the upcoming game against Ferencvaros, the fifth and final in our UEFA Europa League group, in which Espanyol are clear leaders, the respect that it deserves. The central midfielder, who does not skirt around the subject of the game against Getafe, or upcoming league games, is clear that the visitors, top of the Hungarian league, have already shown their ability in the reverse fixture at the RCDE Stadium: “They have some good players, and we will have to put the work in to get the victory and top the group”. He reiterates, “it’s a competition that we love, we´re going into it with a great deal with enthusiasm. We’re not focusing on things that have gone wrong. To represent this club in Europe is an honour”.
He insists that “a lot of work went in to qualifying for Europe and the team has risen well to the challenge. We’re on a great run, the best of any Espanyol side in Europe, so we have to try to finish top of the group and after the game on Thursday, then we’ll turn our attention to Osasuna”.
According to the Catalan midfielder, “we need a win” in the league, and he notes that “there are small things the team needs to improve, but when you get a couple of wins on the bounce, everything changes. We just need to put in a good performance and get a win”.
With that in mind, he highlights that “the team is not lacking in intensity or desire. We’ve shown that. If one thing is clear, it’s that we’ll leave everything on the pitch in order to win and to get out of the situation that we’re in. We played well the other day, and if we keep going like that, the results will come”.
He recalls recent results as examples of this. “We’re closer to winning than losing. Everyone would agree that we could have drawn against Villareal and Valencia. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that we should have more points. There are a lot of games left and there’s a long way to go”.
