In-depth with Diego Martínez
An interview with the new coach
New RCD Espanyol coach Diego Martínez gave an in-depth interview to talk about his decision to take the job, his ambitions and his coaching style.
Why he chose Espanyol
"This is something that you feel, and I felt that this was the project to take on. From the first moment, with the clarity and ambition that the club transmitted to me, I believed that we could fit together. It was very attractive to me, looking from the outside, that Espanyol are a historic club and have something special."
His perception of Espanyol
"The club have a special, different personality; they have soul and some associated values that are implicit, such as the spirit of overcoming adversity, feeling that together we can be very strong, etc. When I visited with the away team, I found it to be a very attractive club."
Excitement about coaching Espanyol
“It is tremendously exciting. There is motivation for me, and also my coaching staff, to make sure that everything flows. This is where we want to be; It is a real privilege and a great source of pride."
Describing himself
"I consider myself to be a person who tries to live my life in line with the values that I have. This means being consistent with what you do and feel, passion, positive emotions… With that, everything flows and is easier, and is experienced in a more intense way. For me, my profession is a way of life, and this club is a way of life too. I think it is a perfect fit."
The challenge ahead
"We want to put together a special team. We want to be at our best at every moment; the results are down to a prior process. If we manage to make each day something extraordinary and we maintain this over time, the following week we will be better, and after a month even better. This will take us to where we deserve."
What the fans can expect
"We would like them to trust us, in the people who form the RCD Espanyol family. Together we will be stronger. My great desire as a coach is for the team to excite them and transmit something; sometimes it will be through good play, sometimes through attitude, sometimes through overcoming circumstances... But I want us to always be competitive and respect the values that represent us."
