González: "I am very happy and proud to be in charge of the first team"
The coach speaks about his contract extension
The day after the announcement that he will continue as RCD Espanyol coach for the 2024/25 season, Manolo González spoke to the media in an official event at the Auditorium Juan Segura Palomares, accompanied by club CEO, Mao Ye Wu, and sporting director, Fran Garagarza.
“I am very happy and proud to be in charge of the first team. It has been a tough time and I want to thank the players and coaching staff of both the B team and the first team for their desire, their committment and all their hard work. We are really looking forward to the new campaign and I am sure that we will have a good season,” said González.
Asked about the resources that the club will have to put together a squad for the Primera División, the coach stated that “things in life are difficult and this is not easy. Everything seems very nice, but I'm used to other divisions: This is not what worries me the most. We will give everything we have for the club and work like beasts. I am convinced that we are going to stay up next season, although it is going to be a tough year.”
“I have always been positive. I have tried to look beyond just results," he added.
González also stated that his “background and experience at other levels” will be useful when adapting to a new challenge.
“Everything I have experienced up until now has helped me get the team from the Segunda División to the Primera División. I want to do my job as best as possible, and build a team that the fans identify with and feel proud to support. The team have already reached levels that I thought we would not reach, because of not having time to assimilate things."
CEO Mao thanked González for having “taken on the challenge of coaching first team in a difficult moment," commenting that “we will have to continue fighting,” whilst Garagarza pointed out that he has many aspects in common with González and made it clear that he has earned his renewal.
