First win of 2022 with victory against Getafe
A 2-0 home win gets RCD Espanyol back on track
Espanyol opened their win account for 2022 with a deserved 2-0 victory against Getafe at the RCDE Stadium. The team produced a fine first half showing, in which they scored the two goals that earned them the triumph, and were threatened little by the opposition.
The results achieved since the turn of the new year, including a painful defeat to Villarreal the previous weekend, practically obliged Espanyol to win, and they showed that they were highly motivated from the get-go.
Lo Pericos were up against a Getafe side who had clearly improved since the arrival of a familiar face -former Espanyol coach Quique Sánchez Flores- but did not take long to break the deadlock. Sixteen minutes in, a combination between Tonny Vilhena and Leandro Cabrera saw the latter finish off a ball in by the Dutchman.
With the score in their favour, Espanyol kept up the intensity and the second goal was quick in coming: A solo move by Sergi Darder ended with a shot into a crowd of players, deflecting into the net by Getafe's Cabaco.
In the second half, many interruptions and fouls had a direct effect on the flow of the game, and made things much tighter. The fans in the stands also ended up very angry with certain refereeing decisions that did not help calm the atmosphere.
In the end, however, Espanyol withstood the timid attacks from the visitors to keep a clean sheet for the first time in several months, and claim three very important points.
