Espanyol beaten by effective Real Madrid
Los Pericos lose 4-0 at the Bernabéu on Matchday 34
RCD Espanyol wanted to continue adding to points tally and all-but-ensure top flight survival, but their visit to the Santiago Bernabéu ended with Real Madrid winning 4-0 and becoming the new LaLiga champions.
Try as they might, Los Pericos never found the necessary rhythm to trouble the Real Madrid goal, and only required sporadic interventions from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The opposition, on the other hand, were effective in attack and took the chances that came their way.
The first half ended with a Real Madrid advantage on the scoresheet, thanks to two goals from Rodrygo.
Espanyol stepped up a gear at the beginning of the second half, with a Raúl de Tomas free kick and an Aleix Vidal shot that Courtois had difficulty keeping out.
However, Real Madrid remained practical and accurate in attack, Marcos Asensio and Karim Benzema rounding off the scoring in a game in which Los Blancos clinched the LaLiga title.
Next up for RCD Espanyol is a home fixture against CA Osasuna, as they look to mathematically seal a place in the Primera División for 2022/23.
