Diego Martínez: “We must compete at our best level”
The míster previews a tricky test ahead against Real Sociedad
Diego Martínez has asserted that his team must be at their best for the visit of Real Sociedad on Monday.
RCD Espanyol welcome the third-placed side in LaLiga to the RCDE Stadium, looking to rise up the table with each result vital in such a closely contested battle. Speaking to the media from the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque, the mister was pragmatic in his evaluation of the Monday night meeting.
Martínez said, “What we want is to win. We have the opportunity to get three points and we show every week that we give our all. I take the positive side and what matters is that we compete at our best level. The most important thing is to be consistent. We feel good right now and we are confident, and I fully trust this team”.
In the battle of the white-and-blue “Real” sides, Espanyol have been strong at home in 2023 but will nonetheless be vying for the victory. On the other hand, Real Sociedad are winless in three matches but still a force to be reckon with in the chase for Champions League football and beyond.
Martínez spoke in high esteem of La Real, saying, “Everyone says that they have been up there with the best for the last 20 years and they have been doing well for many seasons. They play very well with width, have a top youth academy and a great coach in Imanol [Alguacil]”.
Espanyol will be without star striker Joselu, and although fellow forward Martin Braithwaite is managing a slight injury, “he will be available for Monday”, the mister assured.
Martínez concluded, “Many teams around us are separated by a small margin of points. Since the return from the World Cup break, we have had good numbers and picked up many points, with the exception of one match. That gives us full confidence in the team”.
