Diego López to leave RCD Espanyol
The record-breaking goalkeeper brings an end to a six-season spell at the club
Diego López and RCD Espanyol will part ways from June 30th. The club have decided not to renew the goalkeeper's contract, closing a successful six seasons in which he has been one of the captains and one of the standout players in the squad.
His arrival was a clear declaration of intent by president Chen Yansheng to take a step forward and bolster a squad that he had suffered in previous seasons. Joining from AC Milan and with experience at Real Madrid and Villarreal, he soon became the first choice between the sticks.
Captain of the first team, a dressing room leader and, without a doubt, an example for teammates and young players who aspire to have a career like his, López played 213 official games for RCD Espanyol. In addition, he has three clean sheet records with the club (in the Primera División, Segunda División and Europe) and was a winner of the Zamora award for the goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded in the Segunda División two seasons ago.
Diego López will say goodbye to the club and the fans next Monday, in an act that will take place at the Presidential Box of the RCDE Stadium, starting at 6pm.
