Diego López bids farewell to RCD Espanyol
“From day one I was made to feel special”
Six years after his arrival at the RCDE Stadium, Diego López brought an end to his time at RCD Espanyol with an event held at the ground, attended by several hundred fans in the stands. Visibly moved by the occasion, the goalkeeper only had words of thanks for those who made his spell at 'Los Pericos' possible.
“It has been a wonderful six years. I remember August 31st, 2016 when I arrived here with great desire and enthusiasm to contribute everything that I have, and I have tried to give my all both on and off the pitch for this club," he said to those present.
“It is a very sad day for my family and for me. It is very difficult for me, because my desire was to be able to continue helping the club, but it wasn't possible. It's been six wonderful seasons and I want to thank Espanyol."
"I apologise to all of my teammates for being so demanding to try to get the best out of you: It all came down to hard work and the ambition to be better. I have had many experiences and gained many friends, and from day one I was made to feel special. Espanyol have managed to make my family Pericos forever."
The veteran remarked that “I am aware that my work has been respected by all of the fans. As soon as I arrived, I immediately noticed that this was a unique, big club, respected by all other teams. I only wish I had helped the club to be even greater. This club captivated me with values with which I identify: Pride, courage, suffering and, above all, family. Since I arrived, I have set myself the maximum level of demand every day, and had the ambition and hunger to make the team grow."
“It will always be a special club. My family have been here for many years, and although my daughters are young, they are aware of what is happening. We are happy to have represented this club and for the years we have been in Barcelona,” he stated, concluding that:
“Passion for Espanyol is a feeling that is inherited by parents and children, and that is what has happened to my family. I am happy and proud to have defended the goal here, and my door will always be open to the club. The best thing about Barcelona is being an Espanyol fan. Semper t'estimaré, Espanyol.”
The CEO of RCD Espanyol, Mao Ye, thanked López for his time at the club.
“You have been an example of professionalism and dedication, and you have defended the club and the goal with everything. You will always be part of Espanyol,” said Mao Ye.
Diego López was then presented with the club's gold and diamond award, a commemorative shirt for his 213 official matches for the club, and a captain's armband.
