1-2: Winning warriors at the Coliseum
RCD Espanyol emerge victorious in style away to Getafe
RCD Espanyol earned a crucial 2-1 win away to Getafe on Sunday.
Off the back of a dramatic derby draw with Girona last week, Diego Martínez’s men were vying for a win that could move them out of the relegation zone. Vini Souza returned from suspension while César Montes made his full LaLiga debut at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.
The opening minutes cannot be described as anything other than mental. Getafe lost possession inside the centre circle, and with Joselu dropping deep and without hesitation, he fired it from the halfway line over the goalkeeper and into the net for his 10th league goal of the season and surely his finest yet.
But before the celebrations had barely finished, Getafe roared back with Enes Ünal’s equaliser which flew into the top corner past Álvaro Fernández. A chaotic start saw the scoreline at 1-1 inside seven minutes with anything seeming possible.
Martin Braithwaite had a great chance but could not hit the target, while at the other end Ünal came close again but to no avail. All square at the break, Espanyol were showing promise while Getafe continued to push and find a way through.
Espanyol kept up the momentum going into the second half, and it paid off as they took the lead through Javi Puado. The winger weaved his way through the defence, set himself up and cutely lifted the ball over and past David Soria for a vital lead for the visitors.
With the advantage restored, the final half hour was a nervy one for the pericos, defending with everything they had while searching for another goal. A mammoth performance was rewarded with a huge victory for Espanyol, extending their unbeaten run and rising up the table with a massive three points.
