1-1: No reward for young pericos
RCD Espanyol miss out on the three points as they are held to a 1-1 draw with Valencia Mestalla
RCD Espanyol B were held to a 1-1 draw by Valencia Mestalla on Sunday, despite their dominance at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque.
Both teams showed great intensity during the first half, with fast-pace non-stop action bringing with it much intensity in the all-academy clash. What seemed a clear penalty on Omar Sadik could have changed the game, but the referee did not award it.
In the second half, Espanyol almost took the lead through Pau Casadesús, but his shot came close to the post and out. The hosts felt comfortable attacking from the flanks where they could hurt Valencia Mestalla, threatening with every attack they had.
With a quarter of an hour left José Luis Catalá broke the deadlock, finishing off a free kick delivered by Roger Martínez. Valencia tried to react against an Espanyol team that defended very well, with Angel Fortuño having little to do. But in an attack with five minutes left, Valencia managed to make it 1-1 and it ended all square.
A draw that means little for Manolo González's team in a match they dominated and should have won, but attention now turns to the visit of SD Formentera to the Dani Jarque.
