1-0: Harsh late defeat
RCD Espanyol B fall to a last-minute defeat on the road to SE Penya Independent
RCD Espanyol B were beaten late on in a 1-0 defeat to SE Penya Independent on Sunday.
The match began with an early opportunity for Espanyol, when Javi Hernández hit the post in the first minute as Javi Chica's team dominated much of the first half. Penya Independent had a clear chance after the break with a cross shot by Piera that narrowly missed the target.
Penya Independent continued to press and create danger, with most of the chances of the afternoon falling their way. But it was the Mágico who were closest to an opener, again from Hernández whose shot flew over from inside the box.
Penya Independent continued to push as Piera hit the post from a cross, before his header ended with a shot that needed to be saved by Iker Venteo before the rebound hit the post again. With seven minutes left, the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Marcos Bautista was shown two bookings in quick succession, giving Espanyol a huge opportunity to snatch the win.
But deep into stoppage time in the 94th minute, a penalty in favour of Penya Independent was converted by Isuardi. The referee then blew the whistle to end the game without allowing Espanyol the chance to respond, leaving the Chica’s boys defeated in cruel fashion on the road.
