“We want to recover Espanyol’s DNA”
Ángel Gómez, presented as new sports director
Ángel Gómez has been presented as new Espanyol’s sports director. Gómez, who has been working since February in an interim basis, started his conference thanking the club, the players of this season, Óscar Perarnau, and his work team: “Since February they have been working incredibly. We want to give a step forward. We also want to maximize our Academy and that players that arrive to the first team increase the level”.
Gómez has also explained what he wants from the team next season. “I want the team to have an identity and recover the DNA we used to have. When I was younger I don’t remember if Espanyol played bad o well; what I remember is that the team had a clear DNA. We want to have a full stadium and the attitude of the team it is non-negotiable”.
The new responsible for the sports area said that “the club will now have access to players that before we couldn’t sign. I want a squad with 22 players and give the young talent footballers an opportunity. However, they will have to increase their level”.
Ángel Gómez said that he doesn’t like to fix aims. “Everybody knows I don’t like to lose. Every week we have to try to win and when the season ends, we will see where we are. Our aim, as Luis Aragonés said, is to win, win and win”.
In his speech, Gómez also pointed out that the club will have more money to spend in signings. “Until now we have been used to sign players at no cost. Now we have the option to pay a specific amount of money. We are sure we can have a team that will be able to fight for ambitious goals. We are looking for contrasted players, with more experience, a good level and competitive too”.
Robert Ramon has endorsed the work of Angel Gomez "since the day he took over on an interim basis" of sports plot and announced that the process "has been natural. We have chosen the best option and we can guarantee the success. We have done it with patience, analysis and security of the steps we are taking. We haven’t stopped working."
The CEO has also argued that "this week we have presented the new sports director and we will do the same with the new coach", but has avoided giving details of the new coach.
