“I couldn’t say no to the project”
Roberto said that he is in his best moment and that he is excited with this signing
Roberto Jiménez has become first Espanyol’s signing for the next season. The goalkeeper has signed his contract for the next three years and afterwards he has been presented at the RCDE Stadium. “I have been following Espanyol’s project. It is a very exciting project. I couldn’t say no to the project. I wanted to come back to Spain and to a team that had an interesting project. I have to thank Olympiacos because they helped me in all the ways- I know Quique Sánchez Flores and I have spoken to him a few times”, he said.
“I arrive in my best moment. I have been a professional for the last 10 years. I left Spain three years ago and now I have played more than 250 matches. We all want to play and I am going to do my best to play as many minutes as possible, but I also have the idea that I can contribute with my experience in and out the field”, he said.
Roberto said that “we don’t have to mark high expectations. We must have a solid project and that the team earns confidence. I do see myself playing Champions with Espanyol ; we can’t cut our expectations. Therefore, we have to go step by step and do things slowly. As the squad gets confirmed we will be able to achieve our goals”.
The goalkeeper said that he has friendship with Álvaro, Hernán Montañés or Pape Diop. “We have a great Stadium and the players that have been here longer point out that is a very familiar club”. He also said that his new team mate Pau López is a goalkeeper “with a great future. He had the opportunity to play a lot this season. I am sure that we will have a healthy rivalry”. The sporting director of the club, Ángel Gómez, has expressed himself in the same terms. “We wanted a rivalry of this level. Pau is young and we think in his future. We wanted a goalkeeper with these skills and Roberto has them With Pau and Roberto the goal is well covered”.
Finally the CEO of RCD Espanyol, Ramón Robert, explained that the first signing of the season has been delayed “because we have defended the club interests Roberto has shown a lot of interest in our project and he has wanted to be part of us”.
