"We approach the Cup with excitement"
Luis García is looking forward to getting the Copa del Rey underway at CD Mensajero
Not even the latest defeat can make Luis García lose heart, as the team prepare to begin their Copa del Rey campaign on Tuesday.
RCD Espanyol travel to La Palma to face CD Mensajero of the Spanish fourth tier, one of the opening ties of the first round of the competition. The coach assessed the test in his pre-match press conference on Monday, ahead of the long trip to the Canary Islands.
García said, “The team believes in what they are doing, of the path we are on, of how we want to evolve and progress. The only way to do that is with good performances and by winning, but not winning in any way because that does the job, but to progress and create something long term. The only way to achieve that is with hard work and unity”.
With full focus on the Copa del Rey tie, the coach revealed that Joan García will be the starting goalkeeper on Tuesday night. Speaking of the young keeper, the mister explained, “Joan is the goalkeeper of our future. This opportunity comes at the ideal time because when they face the challenges from the excitement, it always serves as motivation”.
García continued, “The Cup is special for all pericos, and we approach it with excitement, which gives us a special feeling. We have had the honour of lifting this trophy in the past and it is special for everyone”.
On the recent pressure amidst a string of defeats in the league, the Espanyol coach responded, “I am positive and despite the blows, the only thing I have done is get up and face the challenges; that is all I have ever known. I am lucky to have a family, a staff and some extraordinary players to whom I am grateful. I am convinced that things will work out”.
García concluded, “We go into this game with enthusiasm and humility, with the desire to win again and then we will prepare for Friday's game [against Eibar]. Tomorrow will be complicated, I know the CD Mensajero coach and I know that he is very competitive and they will want to enjoy the Cup, as do we”.
