Rubi, new Espanyol’s coach
The Catalan coach returns to the entity to lead the first team and signs for two seasons
Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, "Rubi" (Barcelona, 1970), will be the new coach of the first team of RCD Espanyol de Barcelona. The Catalan coach, who this campaign has achieved the promotion to First Division with SD Huesca, has signed for two seasons. Rubi will be accompanied by Jaume Torras, second coach, Xavi Gil, physical trainer, and Manel González, as analyst, who will be part of its technical staff along with the team of professionals that the entity already has in the first men's team.
Rubi, who was a footballer, began his career as coach in the UE Vilassar de Mar, Maresme team. Later, he managed CE Sabadell before joining Espanyol’s second team where he was for almost three seasons. The Catalan coach continued his career at the front of Ibiza and Benidorm. In July 2011 he joined the technical staff of Girona as an assistant. In the 2012-2013 season he coached Girona first team, which led to the promotion. After his brilliant season with Girona, he joined the coaching staff of FC Barcelona.
In the 2014-2015 season, he trained at Valladolid, where he qualified in fifth position to play the first playoff promotion. At a later point, he led Levante and Sporting de Gijón in the First Division. After passing through the Asturian side, Rubi takes over the SD Huesca. The Catalan coach has achieved a milestone with the promotion to the highest category for the first time in the history of the club from Huesca. It is, in short, a technician of proven track record, harvested with effort and tenacity since its inception, and now faces a stage with ambition and desire to continue growing as a professional hand in hand with blue and white sports progress.
Rubi is a coach who is committed to an attractive football and looking to make a colorful game and the liking of players and fans. With extensive training and experience, Rubi arrives at an optimum age to lead a project such as the RCD Espanyol. After training our second team a decade ago, Rubi returns to our Club with a new and exciting challenge: consolidate and enhance the sporting growth of the blue and white flag team in this new stage of the institution.
The official presentation of Rubi and his coaching staff will take place on Monday June 4th at 12 noon at the RCDE Stadium, in a private event with limited access to media accredited by the club.
