Match Report: Away win in relegation six-pointer
RCD Espanyol win 0-1 against Deportivo Alavés
A late goal from Fernando Calero earned RCD Espanyol a 0-1 win against relegation rivals Deportivo Alavés, as Los Pericos continued to move closer to safety.
Manolo González fielded the same XI that had drawn against Athletic Club on the last matchday, but were looking for a win on the road that had been hard to come by.
RCD Espanyol came out well and barely allowed their opponents space to breathe. They tried to surprise the opposition defence with the speed of Javi Puado, Roberto González and Jofre Carreras, who had some interesting duels with their markers.
Alavés had a pair of tame shots, and did not generate excessive danger. The tireless Kike García had the clearest chance when he took advantage of a defensive mismatch, but the situation was well resolved by Joan García. As the minutes went by, fewer risks were taken by both teams, who had very clear ideas.
The story of the match barely changed after the break. Alavés did try to have a bit more of an offensive presence, although they did not manage to create clear opportunities -and when they did, they came up against García in goal.
Just when everything seemed on course for a draw, Calero rose high in the area for an 85th minute winner, headed in to give RCD Espanyol their first away win of the season.
