Martínez: "We're hurting"
The coach responds to the 2-3 loss to Real Sociedad
RCD Espanyol coach Diego Martínez spoke after the Monday night defeat to Real Sociedad, and acknowledged that the team had moments of instability during the match.
“We were not at our usual level in some phases of the game. We were facing great opponents -that's why they are third. We had the chance for Calero and from then on, we were outmatched. We couldn't win the duels and we couldn't get the ball back," he began by telling journalists.
"The opening goal hurt us. In the second half we started qucikly and we tried to up the pace, as always, to fight back, but one of many turnovers were conceded and they scored. And then there was the goal to make it 0-3. We didn't give up, the team competed again and we couldn't even have salvaged a point against a great team."
Martínez added that "We couldn't hold back their attacks and then we just used our will to push at the end. This was a match against opponents who, if they get ahead, it is difficult to score against them. We fought until the end against a great team. What made it more difficult for us were the losses of possession in our half. We didn't have continuity in the game.”
The coach insisted that “we believe in what we do. We will pick ourselves back up. It was a difficult day. It hurts for the fans. We would like to have taken another result and put in another performance, but we have to get back up. I think that it will give us a lot of strength. We will definitely turn things around. Everything is so evenly matched. It's not the best day for talk, but we trust in what we are doing."
