Martínez: "The connection between us was absolute"
The coach gives credit to the team and fans for the win over RCD Mallorca
A second win in as many matchdays had Diego Martínez pleased and proud, as RCD Espanyol bested RCD Mallorca 2-1 in LaLiga. Speaking after the game, the coach talked about his plan for the match and what the result means for the team.
“Winning is very hard to do in LaLiga: Just look at the results. Everything is measured by details. We now have two victories in a row, and that brings us closer to our target, but we must be aware that everything will be tough after this. There are no games that are guaranteed wins. We performed well again, and since the return from the Christmas break we have been in good form. We are proud to have 27 points, as winning is so hard to do," he told the media in his post-match press conference.
“I hope the best time is yet to come. You don't have to wait and see what other teams do to value what we do. We cannot aspire to something that we are not. We have spirit and soul. We shouldn't divert our focus," Martínez continued.
"In order to win, you have to do many things well. To get 13 points from 21, you have to do things even better. We always try to keep growing. The connection between us has been absolute against opponents who defend very strongly. I'm very happy with the effort, and the progress. When we had to hang on, we did, and we had very clear chances. It is something to be very proud and happy about."
When it was suggested that this past week has been the most successful since Martínez took over last summer, the coach deflected the credit for the upturn in fortunes.
"I am not Roger Federer or Rafe Nadal; I'm the coach of a football team. I agree that the connection with the fans is one of complete unity. The reaction from the kids is spectacular and it is not easy to get. We wanted to repay them for that energy and encouragement with the three points. This team are special because we grow with adversity. When everyone tells you everything is negative and you keep believing, that's a life lesson," he concluded.
