Martínez: "It was a strange match"
The coach looks back on the 2-1 loss to Real Valladolid
Diego Martínez spoke after RCD Espanyol's 2-1 defeat away to Real Valladolid, giving his analysis of what occured in the Sunday contest.
"It was a strange game. We improved compared to how we started the game. Matches against Real Valladolid always see them using different tactics, and we had to adjust to losing Brian Oliván," he told the media in his post-match press conference.
"We also started the second half well, but without being precise in our passing and our finishing. Despite the second goal, which was a big blow, the team kept trying to get into the game. In the end, we got a goal that didn't help us to get back level, but which will be useful in terms of goal average."
The coach acknowledged that changes in formation throughout the contest were "to give us opportunities in the final stretch. We took a risk and it was back-and-forth: The opposition could have scored as well. The team improved and gave us a chance until the end."
"It was tough for us. It was a difficult match in which we weren't comfortable. I repeat: it was a strange game. However, once again, this team never gives up. We're always there. We want to win and we tried today, but with everything so evenly matched, that is very difficult."
