Luis García: "I'm a person who fights until the end"
The new coach is presented on Tuesday at the RCDE Stadium
A happy and, at times, emotional Luis García was officially presented as RCD Espanyol coach on Tuesday at the RCDE Stadium, accompanied by club CEO Mao Ye and Sporting Director Domingo Catoira.
“Upon arriving here I have found a great legacy of work already done, and that is thanks to an extraordinary coach like Diego Martínez," said García, praising the job done by his predecessor and revealing his excitement at the task ahead.
"I left the first training session today happier than a kid at Christmas. I have had many years in my playing days in which the team have been saved at the last second or on the last matchday. I'm a person who fights until the end. We're going to try to play good football so that our opponents don't like to play against us."
García noted that “I see a very committed dressing room, with great desire and with 'contained anger' because things have not gone as they had wanted. We have to, between us all, get the best from them. The players have to feel calm and loose, and that is our job. They have to float freely on the pitch and they have to be competitive.”
“I know the situation we are in and I know I don't have much time, but that's football. A coach has to be prepared for all of this. I am happy with what I have. I want us to be a team with personality, to have the ball and to attack. The time we have is what it is, and we have to simplify many things. We have to be an uncomfortable opponent for other teams."
Mao Ye, CEO of the club, welcomed the return of Luis García.
"He is coming here to continue building this project. Welcome home, Luís. We hope that you can continue to grow as a coach here," he stated, with Sporting Director Domingo Catoira adding that “Luis is not here because of his passion for the club, but because of his coaching, enthusiasm and knowledge. He was the right person to give continuity to this project."
