"It has not been a pleasant decision"
Carlos García Pont assumes that the dismissal of Quique "was better done now"
Carlos García Pont, vicepresident of RCD Espanyol, made official this morning the departure of Quique Sánchez Flores as coach of the first team and Jordi Lardín, as football director. The blue and white vicepresident thanked, from his first words, the work of both in front of their respective parcels in the club.
"We thought it was better to make this change now and that the team finish better than it was now. We have spoken with the players and we have asked their support to the manager. His response has been exemplary", he said. “David Gallego will take over the team until the end of the season and may also help the second team. The situation is not pleasant or desired, but we wanted to ask the fans to help us make the field of Espanyol, which has always been".
Carlos García Pont said that the decision "has not been from one day to another" but responds to "variables that add up. We understand that this is the right time to get better" and he insisted on the fact "we have done it because we think that in these five weeks we can change the environment of the team and the stands. We have made a tough decision, which we did not want to take. What we ask is that you join us in this decision. And in this margin we ask people to support the players who are going to sweat the shirt".
The vice president has said that he has never had the feeling that "we did not have the will to make decisions. We may not have transmitted it, but there is no idea that there is no rudder in the club. In addition, there have been other recent changes in the club that signal this change of direction, not only in this issue but in others".
In addition to insisting that Quique's response "has been professional" at all times, has also revealed that to occupy the sporting direction, replacing Jordi Lardín, "has been thought of a person with another profile".
