Gerard Moreno will play for Villarreal
The club from Castellón, that already owned 50% of their rights, will pay RCD Espanyol the 20 million corresponding to the value of its termination clause
Gerard Moreno is no longer, officially, a player of RCD Espanyol. The Catalan striker will join the discipline of Villarreal CF after reaching an agreement with the 'groguet' club, which has made effective the commitment to pay the total value of the termination clause for the remaining 50% of the rights on the football player. As it was already known publicly, until now both entities shared equally the economic rights of the striker, who had a termination clause of 40 million euros in his professional contract. The payment of 20 million by Villarreal means the highest income in the history of RCD Espanyol for the departure of one player to another entity.
The Catalan player will continue his career at Villarreal, a team that came when he returned to the blue and white discipline, which will play the Europa League next season. The Castellón club always wanted to have the services of the player again, although RCD Espanyol, that renewed the contract with the player last November, at all times sent the value of the termination clause to all the teams that showed interest for the player.
Gerard Moreno was the blue and white top scorer of last season and is a player loved by the fans of the team. All the blue and white family are grateful to the striker of Santa Perpetua de la Mogoda for the passion and sentiment with which he has defended the shield of RCD Espanyol in his two stages as a footballer and we wish him many personal and sporting success.
The attacker wanted to say goodbye to the blue and white fans and, in words to Espanyol TV, said he has closed "a very happy stage in my life", but he recalled that "Espanyol has always been the club of my life and I would love come back in the future. People have loved me very much and I will always appreciate that".
Gerard also said that "I have really enjoyed these three years and this feeling will not be taken away from me by anyone. I want to thank for everything, for the illusion and affection of the people. I only hope I have returned at least a quarter of the love they have given me".
