García: "The players deserved this win"
The coach celebrates victory over Getafe
Luis García enjoyed his first victory in the Spanish top flight, as RCD Espanyol bested Getafe CF on Matchday 32 of the LaLiga season. Speaking after the game, the coach reacted to a vital win in the relegation battle.
“Victory tastes very sweet. I said on day one that I saw a committed dressing room here. We took two steps forward in the game, showed intensity and were daring... And the fans, who never let us down, accompanied that. The unity between the team and the stands was complete. The victory could have been by an even greater margin," he explained.
"These players deserved victory more than anyone. Being part of football at the highest level means exposing yourself to criticism and you are always in the spotlight. Emotions are hard to hide. I'm happy for them," García continued.
"The players are people, they suffer, they have families. When things don't work out for them, those emotions that they hold in, come out at home. They feel bad like anyone else would. They have been liberated by the result and by the daring they showed in such an important game."
The coach also talked about the chances of survival following the home win.
“I am convinced that it can be done, and have been from the first day I was appointed. I will continue like this until the end. The players deserved to win this match. We competed at a high level and we deserved to win by more."
"We played a great game in every way. They generated very little chances, and we generated enough opportunities to have killed off the game. With a 1-0 lead, any ball in gives you a feeling of danger that is not the case. Everybody stepped forward. You have to keep evolving. Winning makes everything easy and everything look better."
Luis García had special words of praise for club captain Sergi Darder.
“He was like always: Committed. He picked up a knock in the warmup and we were a little worried: He is essential and special for us. He wanted to help and his dedication is why he is a legend at this club,” he concluded.
