García: “We have to focus on ourselves”
The coach is clear that all focus is on the team's performance tomorrow at Sevilla
RCD Espanyol kick off a crucial month away to Sevilla on Thursday, with coach Luis García clear that it is the team’s sole focus for now.
The Mágico will hope to build on their weekend victory against Getafe with a positive result at the Estadio Sánchez Pizjuán, with Sevilla playing their second home match of the week following defeat to Girona.
Speaking pre-match at the RCDE Stadium, García said, “We have to focus on ourselves, on trying to improve the players and forget about what is happening outside. We will do that by aiming to get the three points tomorrow, that is the goal. All I am thinking about is winning tomorrow, we have to focus on doing what is necessary to survive”.
Espanyol travel to Andalusia without the injured José Gragera, while Martin Braithwaite is suspended following a fifth yellow card of the season last weekend. They face a revitalised Sevilla side under new manager José Luis Mendilibar, who have been pushing away from the relegation zone and towards the top half.
García said of the opponents, “Every match is different, but how we approach each one is always the same: to be protagonists with the ball, aim to exploit the space and punish the opponent. Sevilla are a good team with a lot of intensity and width. But we also have our weapons and we arrive at a good physical, mental and footballing moment”.
The mister concluded, “I continue to see the team as very receptive from day one. The players deserved the last win, but we can no longer think about that but rather repeat it. We have to follow our path, we cannot look at the path of others. Regardless of what others do, we have the capacity to do things well”.
