García: “The difficult moments help us to reflect”
The RCD Espanyol views Sunday's season finale against UD Almería in a positive light
The end of the 2022/23 season is upon us this Sunday, as RCD Espanyol host UD Almería at the RCDE Stadium.
Last Sunday’s draw at Valencia confirmed Espanyol’s relegation to the Second Division, with this weekend about playing for pride and leaving LaLiga on a high. There is also an eye on next season for coach Luis García, who spoke to the media in his pre-match press conference at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque on Friday afternoon.
García said, “It has been a complicated and difficult week, missing out on the chance to fight at home on the final day. At the end of the day it comes down to us and it is our responsibility. We have to be capable of being an organised Espanyol without errors in our game and willing to move forward”.
Espanyol take on an Almería side still fighting for survival, led by former manager Rubi who returns to the RCDE Stadium. The Andalusians need a point to stay up, as one of six teams still in contention for the final relegation spot on the final day of the season. For the hosts however, the aim is to give the fans a bit of happiness in a tough season.
García continued, “We must be aware that we need to grow as a Club, and for that we need everyone. We are in a very difficult moment, but we must lay out the path together. Espanyol have economic muscle and strength to be able to compete with this team in the second tier, we have a responsibility to push for an instant return to LaLiga”.
The coach concluded, “The difficult moments help us to reflect and get closer to becoming the team that we want to be. We must go out and honour the badge, we really want to win on Sunday. We must feel pain, anger and helplessness, but also that we must be together to grow.
“We need to have a clear project to be able to do something in the long term. We cannot self-destruct, we must transform it into a positive to grow. The fans will never give up. They helped us and I have no doubt that we are indebted to them”.
