Diego Martínez: "I'm very proud of the players"
Press conference after the 1-1 draw with FC Barcelona
Diego Martínez reacted to the draw in the Catalan derby against FC Barcelona in his post match press conference, reflecting on the effort of the RCD Espanyol squad.
"I'm very proud of these players, they have competed showing the DNA and values of this club. More than ever it has been the force of a feeling. That pushed us on at times when we had to resist FC Barcelona's attacks. We have controlled our emotions and we came back from conceding an early goal," said the coach.
"It's a point from a special game, and it strengthens us emotionally. I feel proud. The players stuck to the game plan, and that makes it easy for us, because when you are behind you can lose your head. The team were calm, well organised, and took advantage of our moments. We just lacked precision in the first half."
Asked about Robert Lewandowski's availability for FC Barcelona, Martínez commented that "It is an unusual situation and the club have explained our stance clearly. It has surprised us and the entire world of football, and sets a very tricky precedent. Neither the timing nor the way it was done were adequate. But we adapt, compete and, as we say in the dressing room, we are prepared for anything regardless of the circumstances."
A controversial refereeing performance from Mateu Lahoz was a point of debate amongst journalists, but Martínez stated that "I've earned the right not to comment on referees. There were a few fouls. It's a game with rhythm, tension, like derbies are, and we're talking about one of the best referees in the world."
In closing, he said "We wouldn't have been able to play this game four months ago. We weren't ready. We have to prepare for the next game, which is not going to be easy. When you see a dressing room that gives everything, that remains convinced of what we are doing, I have rarely felt so proud. When you are up against opponents who are so strong, it's tough."
