Álvaro Fernández joins RCD Espanyol
Goalkeper arrives on season-long loan
Álvaro Fernández has completed a move to RCD Espanyol.
The goalkeeper joins the club on a season-long loan from second-tier side SD Huesca, with an option to buy at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
Fernández spent last season on loan with Premier League club Brentford, where he made 16 appearances as they earned survival and a second season in the top flight.
The 24-year-old is a Spain international having made his debut in a 4-0 win over Lithuania last year. He has represented his country throughout the junior ranks right up to the senior side, as well as being part of the squad for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Fernández began his career with Osasuna, playing for the B team before debuting for the first team and making his LaLiga debut at just 18. It earned the young keeper a move to Monaco’s B team, from which he returned to Spain on loan with Extremadura UD.
The Spaniard signed for Huesca in 2019 and achieved promotion back to LaLiga in his debut campaign. He has made 58 appearances across three years for the club.
Fernández becomes Espanyol’s ninth summer signing and the second goalkeeper to join this window, following the arrival of Benjamin Lecomte on loan from Monaco.
Subject to passing his medical, Fernández will be presented on Wednesday in the Juan Segura Palomares Auditorium at the RCDE Stadium.
