RCD Espanyol Femení triumph at home against Athletic Club B Femenino
RCD Espanyol Femení earned a dominant 3-0 win against Athletic Club B Femenino in an impressive performance on Sunday, thanks to an Adriana Martín goal and a brace from Alba Mellado.
The opening 45 minutes saw an early chance for Mellado and a clear opportunity in response from Athletic, denied by Mar Segarra on her return between the sticks, but it was the pericos who soon took over. They kept control and, when the visitors won the ball back and transitioned into attack, held the defensive line well to reduce the opportunities.
The first goal of the game arrived just before the half-hour, when Adriana swung a free kick into the net to make it 1-0.
After the interval, Espanyol came out to kill the match off. They experienced few moments of danger from their Basque rivals, and extended their lead in the 53rd minute through Mellado.
Athletic went down to ten players when Eider was sent off for a challenge on Nayadet Opazo, giving Carol Miranda's side a further advantage.
Mellado scored her second on the hour mark to double her tally and give the hosts a healthy advantage on home soil. They continued to test goalkeeper Paula until the end, with a series of saves keeping the score down, but it was a resounding win for RCD Espanyol Femení ahead of an away trip to Eibar next weekend.
