RCD Espanyol prevail in Copa de La Reina tie

RCD Espanyol Femení beat Cacareño 2-0 in the Copa de la Reina on Wednesday.

Espanyol took a pause from their Primera RFEF campaign as attention turned to the round 2 cup tie at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque. It also provided a dress rehearsal for Sunday, where the Femení will face Cacareño once again in the league.

It was one-way traffic from the first whistle for Espanyol, who were out for a goal to take control of the tie. Natalia Fernández’s looping shot came off the base of the post, before she would come close again as her effort flew not far off the top corner.

The hosts were then awarded a penalty when Nora Fernández was brought down as she made her way through the defence. Captain Adriana Martín assumed responsibility, burying it into the bottom corner for her first goal of the season.

Espanyol continued to push and had a few opportunities to double their lead straight away. As the game tailed towards half-time, Cacareño began to look dangerous going forward, winning battles in the final third but unable to convert it into an equaliser.

Cacareño would have the early share of chances in the second half with Ilona Guede’s header and Tania Sánchez’s shot from outside the box. Though they drew simple saves from goalkeeper Andrea Crespo, it was a sign that the visitors certainly not out of this one.

Having come close in the first half, Natalia was determined to get her goal. She had three decent chances within a matter of minutes to do so, but on each occasion, she was denied by a string of strong saves from goalkeeper Inés García.

The visitors were giving it everything to get back into it, and almost did were it not for Crespo’s crucial save from Guede’s shot which was one of Cacareño’s best chances.

But Espanyol wrapped it up thanks to Núria Martínez, who met the corner perfectly at the near post to score a powerful header. Her first goal for the Club all but sealed the victory for the Femení, sending them into round three of the Copa de La Reina.
