2-0: A winning weekend
Huge win at home for RCD Espanyol Femení over Córdoba Femenino
RCD Espanyol Femení came away with an important 2-0 win over Córdoba Femenino on Sunday.
Beginning the second half of the season at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque, Espanyol were vying for a win in their pursuit of the play-off spots. Córdoba themselves were in the relegation zone and looking for a way out, with plenty to play for on a chilly Sunday morning in Barcelona.
There were a few chances for both sides early on, though none so clear cut as to test the goalkeepers. Nuria Martínez recovered from being barged into the advertising boards to return to the pitch, while María Pi made a simple but vital save soon after.
Adriana Martín had a golden chance to break the deadlock before the break, but a combination of misjudging the ball’s path and some last-ditch defending kept her at bay and the scoreline goalless at half-time.
Espanyol went for it in the second half and could have taken the lead in no time, as Adriana’s effort came off the bar before Pixu’s rebound was saved by Carmen Gordillo.
But Pixu would not be denied a second time; Carol Marín won the ball back in a dangerous area, pulling it back for Pixu to guide it home and give the Femení a well-deserved lead after almost an hour. They had to stay alert when María Lara turned well inside the box, but Pi once again saved well to keep Córdoba at bay.
The hosts wrapped it up late on when Judit Pablos beat keeper Gordillo to the ball, delicately lifting the ball over her and into the back of the net. It secured a vital victory for Espanyol and a deserved one too, kicking off the second half of the Primera RFEF Femenina season in style.
