1-0: Victory to go top
Mar Torras' goal gives RCD Espanyol Femení the win and the top spot in the league
RCD Espanyol Femení saw out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Deportivo Abanca Femenino on Sunday.
Espanyol were looking for another victory at home and to remain undefeated in the competition against a Deportivo team that came to Barcelona as league leaders.
It was the hosts who were searching for an early lead, with Lice coming close with a good header that Yohana managed to save. Immediately afterwards, Mar Torras hit the bar from a corner, but the warning signs for the visitors were there.
In the 16th minute Espanyol got their reward, when a great cross from Daniela Caracas found Mar in the box to head it into the bottom corner. Deportivo, in search of an equalizer, took possession but Adrián González's team showed great defensive strength and even had clearer chances.
Caracas failed to find a goal in a drive into the area and, shortly before half-time, Mar Torras, with a long shot, failed to widen the gap on the scoreboard by centimetres.
The heavy rain that fell in the Dani Jarque CE was the main protagonist at the break and forced the referees to delay the start of the second half by 40 minutes due to the water accumulated on the pitch.
After the delay, the second half started normally and the first chance fell for Deportivo. Salvador, with a great save, avoided the tie and Ainhoa Marín found the crossbar. The minutes of dominance for the Galicians forced coach González to make changes and Espanyol has once again taken control of the ball and the chances of the match.
In the end, a hard-fought win for the hosts was a testament to the team’s commitment throughout the game. Above all, the three points move Espanyol above the beaten Deportivo and onto the top of the league.
