1-0 defeat in first preseason friendly
RCD Espanyol undertake a summer fixture against Cádiz CF
After almost three weeks of preparation, RCD Espanyol played their first serious preseason friendly against Cádiz, losing 1-0 in Marbella.
The match started with chances for both teams. Álvaro Negredo had the first unsuccessful strike for Cádiz, whilst Dimata managed to get past David Gil after a precise pass from Javi Hernández and was wrongly pulled back for offside.
Espanyol looked to take control against an orderly, defensively solid Cádiz. The opposition were close to taking the lead, but both Joan and Cabrera reacted in time to prevent a goal.
A tactical match played at a high pace, Los Pericos looked to the class of Darder and the inspiration of Lazo to open up the game, and Jofre had two good chances to score. Most positively, they continued to apply the ideas of coach Luis García, instilled during the summer so far.
The two teams made numerous changes during the second half, but the momentum lay with Espanyol. Puado finished wide after rounding Ledesma in goal.
Cádiz only provided danger from set pieces, using their physicality to their advantage. It was precisely from a dead ball that they managed to score, thanks to a header from Mbaye.
After the goal, Cádiz began to feel more comfortable with the ball, while Espanyol had a hard time stringing together a series of passes. Vadillo gave the attack a bit of spark with two consecutive chances before the end, but it would be a 1-0 loss that started off preseason for Los Pericos.
