1-0: Big win
RCD Espanyol B prevail over SD Formentera
RCD Espanyol B beat SD Formentera 1-0 thanks to Ian Forns’ header on Sunday.
Luis Blanco gave starts to two Juvenil youngsters at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque, Javi Hernández and Forns. They hosted a Formentera side just two points off the pace in sixth, in what has so far been a competitive fight for the Segunda RFEF title.
There was plenty of action early on, with Espanyol having most of the chances. Hernández sent his shot through the crowd but just wide, while Carlos Mangada struck well to test the goalkeeper.
Formentera keeper Óscar Santiago was keeping the score goalless, first denying Ian Forns at the near post. His next save was outstanding; Hernández caught the ball perfectly and fired it goalbound, only missing the top corner through a stunning stop.
Though Espanyol were in control and dictating the match, Formentera were growing into it and almost took the lead were it not for Javier Lancho’s goal-line clearance. Half-time came with both sides still pushing for the breakthrough.
Diego Díaz went through on goal with the first real chance of the second half, but could only fire into the side netting from his near-post effort. Espanyol had a double chance when Hernández’s volley was blocked, before Lancho fired over from close range.
There followed a tight 20 minutes where neither side could get through on goal, fighting hard for possession in an even encounter. Espanyol finally found their way through when Juan Camilo Becerra won the ball back in the box, pulling it back for Forns to head home and get the goal that they deserved.
Formentera were only fired up more by the goal, and Sergio Mendinueta would have equalised without Lluís Recasens’ fantastic challenge to deny him. Espanyol B defended superbly in the closing stages to see out the win, staying level on points with league leaders Teruel.
