0-0: To the play-offs
RCD Espanyol will compete in the LALIGA HYPERMOTION play-offs after drawing with SD Amorebieta
RCD Espanyol were held to a 0-0 draw by SD Amorebieta away from home on Sunday, confirming their LALIGA HYPERMOTION play-off spot.
In their final away match of the season in the Basque country, Manolo González’s men needed a win to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive and a draw to secure their play-off berth. On the other hand, hosts Amorebieta were fighting for survival and proving tough to break down, keeping goalkeeper Joan García en garde all game long.
Javi Puado fired over the bar in the early stages, while Martin Braithwaite’s low free kick that was pushed away by the opposition goalkeeper was the closest chance yet. Goalless at the break, Salvi Sánchez came off the bench to add even more attacking firepower in search of a breakthrough.
Espanyol thought they had the opener when Pere Milla’s effort was followed up by Puado, but Milla was offside when the ball was played to him. With the way results elsewhere were going, the Mágico had to push for maximum points and still had a lifeline, though were fortunate to see Amorebieta’s goal flagged for offside.
However, they could not find a way through and had to settle for a goalless draw at Lezama. The result means that Espanyol will compete in the LALIGA HYPERMOTION play-offs for the chance to return to the top flight.
