“We were defensively fragile”
Luis Miguel reflects on a goalscoring draw with Burgos CF to conclude 2023
RCD Espanyol coach Luis Miguel Ramis gave his verdict on his side’s 3-3 draw against Burgos CF on Tuesday.
The final game of 2023 ended in a goalscoring affair at the Stage Front Stadium, where Espanyol came from behind to equalise on three separate occasions. Goals from Martin Braithwaite, Sergi Gómez and Javi Puado salvaged a point going into the winter break.
Ramis said, “Among all the mistakes we made, the team had the poise to come back three times in a situation that was not easy, and that is a very positive reading that I take from today. We equalised three times in a match that was not easy due to the situation we are in, but we must work hard to gain much more confidence.
“We were defensively fragile, and offensively we did not test our opponents. I think we are capable of much more because we have already shown it; today we take a point”.
Espanyol ended the night in fourth and, by the end of matchday 21, will finish the year in the play-off positions. The team will then break for Christmas before beginning their preparations for the Copa del Rey third round match against Getafe in the new year, before they travel to Racing de Ferrol to resume their LALIGA Hypermotion campaign.
Ramis continued, “It is not what we wanted. If we had won we would be in the automatic promotion spots and it was a good opportunity, so it is a shame. We started the game with a lot of mistrust and giving up a lot of space to the opponent. From there, we had to overcome too many difficulties that we brought upon ourselves”.
The head coach wrapped up his press conference by saying, “I think that defensive fragility is creating distrust in us. It is difficult for teams to get through games with just the attacking plan. We stopped doing things that we have worked hard for. We have doubts that the opponent hurt us every time they got into our area. However, we ended up having a chance to win the match, which had become very difficult to do”.
