“It’s a good point”
Abelardo is pleased with the team’s reaction in the second half in the draw against Athletic Club
RCD Espanyol de Barcelona were able to rescue a well-earned point against Athletic Club, although victory at the RCDE Stadium still evades them. Abelardo Fernández was pleased with the result given the team’s current predicament. “It’s a good point given our needs. The goal in the first half affected us, we were caught off guard by the corner, and we started to chase the game but in the second half the team changed, we switched up our tactics and the players took it on board well. Afterwards, the game could have gone either way. The team competed well, and the players gave everything. We have to think in the moment. The second round of fixtures has started and we have 4 points, things are looking up”.
The ‘blanquiazul’ coach counts the draw as in keeping with the teams positive results, as they remain undefeated in 2020 in the league. “Our performances so far have been good. The team has competed well in the last three games, with ups and downs, and we haven’t lost. If we manage 5 points from every 9, I’ll be a happy man. It’s a good point, especially if we bear in mind that we’ve taken 5 points against 3 very tough opponents and now we have to focus on winning in Granada”.
Abelardo did not omit to mention the almost thirty thousand ‘pericos’ that came to support the side at the RCDE Stadium. “The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible, the fans really spurred the team on and encouraged them, and it was fantastic. We have to try and channel the fans’ support on the pitch. Today, we gave the ball unnecessarily a few times and they stayed with us, willing us on. I know that we’ll be competitive – this is football and anything can happen – but the team is keen to make things right and that gives me peace of mind”, the Espanyol coach concluded.
