Three points for RCD Espanyol against RCD Mallorca
Raúl de Tomás is set up by Sergi Darder for the only goal in a 1-0 win
RCD Espanyol returned to winning ways with a victory against RCD Mallorca on LaLiga Matchday 29, as Raúl de Tomás scored the only goal in a 1-0 triumph. The three points keep Los Pericos in a comfortable position in the table, and reward the team for their perseverance in recent weeks.
The win came off the back of a draw against Levante UD on the road last time out, and with RCD Espanyol looking to move clear of the relegation battle. They came out positively, with RDT already participating in the early stages of the game. Adriá Embarba, the main novelty in the starting eleven due to the absence of the suspended Javi Puado, also had an impact on play, with the two clearest goalscoring opportunities in the first half that went off-target.
There was also a moment of uncertainty in a controversial move that could have ended with a penalty in favor of Mallorca, but which was given as a foul in favor of Espanyol due to a trip by Jaume Costa on Embarba.
At the end of a tactical first half, the Darder – RDT connection came through to put RCD Espanyol ahead. After a great recovery from Yangel Herrera in midfield, Darder set off, received the ball and set up RDT to break the deadlock.
Neither side showed great fluidity upon the restart, which featured Oier Olarzabal replacing Diego López in goal. The returning keeper lasted 45 minutes on his return from injury.
Truth be told, there was little for Olarzabal to do, as Espanyol had most of the later chances. A solo move by RDT was only just off target, and then he also struck from outside the area, with an effort caught by the opposition goalkeeper. Olarzabal's final intervention kept out a dangerous shot from Muriqi, as RCD Espanyol held their advantage until the end to take three very important points.
