"Sport is diverse"
RCD Espanyol join the Catalan government's campaign on International Day Against Homophobia in Sports
RCD Espanyol is proud to show its support in the fight against homophobia in society on International Day Against Homophobia in Sports (19th February).
As part of the campaign launched by the Catalan government and throughout global sport, the message is loud and clear: “Sport is diverse”. Everyone is welcome in sport, regardless of their sexual orientation, identity or gender expression. Difference and diversity, in any area, enrich and transform society.
19th February is chosen as the date in honour of the birthday of Justin Fashanu, the renowned British footballer who was one of the game’s first openly gay players. This day commemorates his fight to give visibility to LGBTI + people in sport.
RCD Espanyol, as a representative of the world of sport, supports the right of all people to practise sport without discrimination of any kind against LGBTI+ people and condemns any type of aggression, inequality or incitement to violence towards their group, on and off the pitch.
