Martínez: "We had to give the fans a win"
The coach speaks after the victory against Real Valladolid
RCD Espanyol coach Diego Martínez spoke in his post-match press conference that he was very satisfied with the victory against Real Valladolid.
Espanyol earnt a hard-fought 1-0 win at the RCDE Stadium, thanks to Joselu's header in the closing the stages. It is the team's first at home this season, which the coach acknowledged was especially pleasing for the fans.
He said, “I want to congratulate the players and the fans. The first half was very good, except for the final minutes. We lacked the effectiveness to score. You have to be able to compete: The opposition can hurt you, but we played a complete game. When you are not able to score a goal you must be firm and focused.
"We hit the post, and we are still the team with the most shots against the woodwork. We deserved to make it 2-0. We kept a clean sheet, managing the last minutes better than we have before. I'm happy for everyone."
The coach has pointed out, “We needed to improve. A week ago we talked about that anxiety when you have the scoreline in your favour, and we improved this. It is a significant fact, but I want to win points, not just keep clean sheet. There is No need to obsess. Nine games and nine points is the reality. Everything will take blood and sweat and I hope not tears, as we have already shed a lot."
He concluded, "The victory gave a great feeling. There were some children who really moved me with their celebrating the goal with great joy. We had to give something to the fans who spur us on. Hopefully we all understand the circumstances. Together we are better and stronger. It was spectacular to see how they celebrated from the bench. That is why we try to give our all. We must continue to grow and improve, this is the way forward."
