Martínez: "We cannot accumulate so many mistakes"
The coach's view of the 2-2 draw with Elche CF
RCD Espanyol coach Diego Martínez reacted to his team's 2-2 draw with Elche CF at the RCDE Stadium, and lamented a defensive error that led to the away team's equaliser in the second half.
"It's inexplicable. Once again we make a mistake that you can't afford to make in the Primera División. You can't concede a free kick in that area and it's also not what we have been training to defend from it. We had two central defenders in the area, but we conceded a goal. That was after we had done the most difficult thing, which was to fight back from behind," he analysed.
“We train this and we watch videos, but there are circumstances that hinder us. It is difficult to get consecutive wins. This is one of those games where we dropped two points. We are a team in every situation. There are mistakes that are punishing us. One focuses on each error leading to a goal. If we are rational, those errors have been distributed amongst the team. You have to accept it, and there are players who have improved their level. It takes a lot to win a match."
Martínez added that “We have to keep fighting. We have to lift ourselves up and this is our life. I see it as these being setbacks that have to make us stronger, but we cannot accumulate so many mistakes."
“The judgement is at the end of the season. We all have frustration. We needed to get more points, and in many moments we deserved to. We already knew that we had to fight with those eight or nine teams around us, and we already said it at the beginning," he concluded.
