Martínez: “We are excited and we want to compete”
RCD Espanyol coach is optimistic about Sunday's match against Elche
Diego Martínez looked ahead to RCD Espanyol’s match against Elche this Sunday.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference at the RCDE Stadium on Saturday, the coach addressed the challenge of a third game in a week, while emphasising the importance the home crowd will have in the pursuit for three points.
Martínez said, “We are excited about the match and we want to compete to get the three points. We know that it will be a difficult opponent - they drew in Valencia - but we believe in the team and trust in our chances. It’s a very important match and we want to make the fans feel like they did last Sunday again.”
Espanyol will look to bounce back after midweek defeat at Osasuna on Thursday, but also build on their home form which saw a first win at the RCDE Stadium last time out.
The coach said, “We always compete and fight. We adapt to many circumstances and tomorrow we will have to find our best level. Good results help you grow faster and give you more security. I think we deserve more points than we have, but that cannot be changed.
“What is certain is that the team needs to harmonise the best moments with the not so good ones. We have to try to make sure that the games don't come out more rounded, more complete.”
Regarding team news, Martínez reminded the media that Rúben Sánchez and Gori remain unavailable, while Óscar Gil is a doubt for Sunday. Going into the final game of a hectic seven days, the expectations from the blanquiazul coach are clear.
“With three games in a week it gets a little more complicated,” Martínez said. “You have to be aware, and it will be very difficult. We want to win, but it will be a demanding game, because they are an opponent with very good players.”
He concluded, “When we don’t reach our required physical level, we need the collective mentality, the support and encouragement from the fans, and that we compete all together in the match, united and cohesive.”
