González: "We want the team to continue growing"
The coach previews Matchday 4
RCD Espanyol coach Manolo González believes that his team are making progress with each matchday, but insists that they can still get better ahead of their game against Rayo Vallecano.
"We still have room for improvement in many aspects. For example, last year, in Gijón and Oviedo, the team ended up being what we wanted to be. We want the team to continue growing. We have to focus on being an aggressive and competitive team that chase the three points in every game.”
Regarding Rayo, this Saturday's opponents, he pointed out that “they are a very good team, that compete well and dominate many aspects. They are very well organised and demand the maximum from you. We have to give it 120 percent, every week. I think we have realised that we all have to take a step forward to win games. All teams find it difficult to win, so we have to raise the competitive level as much as we can.”
For the coach, the key is “finding balance," and he insists that “we cannot attack without thinking or defend all the time, because neither one thing nor the other gives you the chance to win games.”
Regarding the lack of goals for the team thus far, he said that “when the first goal comes, the rest will come, all at once. I hope that day is tomorrow and that we have a good game and get the three points.”
Just hours before the summer transfer market closes, he stressed that “the club made a great effort, taking into account the resources we had. We have brought in players who want to help. The squad has improved and is competitive. The sooner they are at their best, the better.”
