González reviews preseason
"I think the work has gone well," say RCD Espanyol coach
Manolo González had a tough task ahead of him this summer, with only 27 days of preparation for the 2024/25 season. With the preseason friendlies now completed, he gave an assessment of the last month of activity for RCD Espanyol.
“The past four weeks have been quite good, but the friendly against Sabadell was a black mark on our name. For me, the team didn't perform well in that game; We did not compete at our level tru. In other games, regardless of the results but with only one defeat, I think the work has gone well. We are coming into the season with experience, but we are lacking a little something. We started our work late because we also finished last season late. Now it is time for LaLiga to begin and we have to compete. We have to think that our rivals are not as experienced now as they will be in a month from now," he explained.
The coach also lamented that, due to the tight schedule this preseason, there was not an excess of friendlies.
“We could have played a few more games, which would have been good for us. I hope that the players who have arrived at the last minute can help us, so that the team can compete in good conditions," he told the media.
"The current squad still has room for improvement. I have told the players to stop being afraid of failing. We need them to find the kind of showing they gave against Oviedo. They were under a lot of pressure, but the team were the protagonists. That is what we have to do. If we improve, we will take a step forward throughout the season.”
